‘96 Johnians’ Reunion
5th August 2017
The 1996 batch of old boys of St. John’s College celebrated their 40th birthday at the ’96 Johnians| Reunion on 5th August 2017 at St. John’s College, Jaffna.
The day’s programmes commenced at about 7.45 a.m. with the reception of about sixty-five Johnians in their ‘school uniform.’ After a warm welcome by the Principal, the Rev. N.J.Gnanaponrajah, they all marched towards the ground in a procession where the present teachers, students and office staff were waiting.
The Celebrations began with the singing of the College Hymn, Students’ Prayer and Oath.
After the Principal’s welcome address was the cutting of the 40th birthday cake. The audience sang the Happy Birthday song.
The next event was the SK Mahalingam’s Inter-Stream A/L 7-a-side Soccer Tournament between the UPVI Arts and Science Stream.
The former won two goals to one. The Awards Ceremony followed almost instantaneously.
The old boys adorned their teachers with ‘Pon Adai’ (golden shawls) in the grounds and towards noon, in the Peto Memorial Hall.
Some old boys and senior teachers recollected interesting events of the past. It was a nostalgic experience for everyone. After the walk down memory lane, everyone walked towards the buffet table for the fellowship lunch after which friendly cricket and soccer matches were held between the teachers and the prefects.
The College is grateful to the 1996 batch of old boys for donating 12 whiteboards to the school.
